Branding Packages

What does this unique branding process look like?

You’ll book a start date and a package based on how quickly you want your branding process completed. Packages start on the 1st and the 15th of each month. Two weeks in advance of your start date, you’ll receive our Branding Workbook, which you’ll complete and send back to us. Knockout! will review and study your answers before meeting you in person or by video call to go over them, to be sure we have a solid understanding of your needs.

After some research and work, we’ll meet in person to go over your logo concepts, and you’ll receive our Client Feedback Worksheet which provides a structure for giving us productive, helpful change requests. You’ll receive a fresh e-copy of this worksheet every time you’re presented with a new revision or proof. Subsequent logo revision presentations or collateral proofs will be emailed to you; you don’t need to see our shining countenances every time you review items from us.

This branding process is unique because you’re not limited to the number of logo concepts or revisions you get. We’ll establish at the beginning how many concepts you’d like to see, and from there we’ll continue with revisions until you’re perfectly happy. Or, if none of the concepts are hitting the mark, we’ll go back to the drawing board and present you with fresh ones. Of course, the more we continue with revisions, the longer the completion timeline is drawn out. You will be kept abreast of timeline expectations and progress with a weekly report; at 2 weeks from initial expected completion we will have a check-in call to discuss if we need additional time. We feel that this structure provides our clients with the most flexible path to the perfect brand identity possible.

How do I see more logo concepts or request more revisions?

Just let us know in your Client Feedback Worksheet. We’ll respond right away with an estimated timeline update.

What if I want to add in other, related projects/collateral?

This can be handled in two ways: either by extending the completion timeline, or by purchasing an a la carte design package on top of your monthly allotted hours. The latter does not affect your completion timeline.

How long does a basic branding package usually take?

Our Middleweight Branding Package covers a standard branding project within 3 months. Larger projects can be completed in the same time with a Heavyweight Branding Package, or for the same rate and a longer completion timeline.

Can I add/subtract hours from my monthly allotment?

Of course. You may upgrade to a higher package tier at any time in advance of the start of your next month. After the initial minimum commitment, you may downgrade to a lower package tier with 10 business days’ written notice.

What is the minimum commitment?

The minimum initial commitment is 3 months. In that period, you may increase your monthly hours, but you may not decrease them or cancel. Fees will apply if you do, and no one likes fees.

How do you bill extended timelines?

Timelines will be extended in 1-month increments. In very select circumstances, we’ll consider reducing this to 2-week increments; we’re not monsters.

Do I get that sweet priority scheduling?

Sadly, friend, no. We can’t claim that priority scheduling is special if everyone gets it. Don’t worry though: branding projects are typically pre-planned out by us, your design team, and branding clients very rarely, if ever, have needed to make use of a priority scheduling-like arrangement. If you have a pressing deadline, see “What if I want to add in other, related projects/collateral?” above.

What files will I receive?

In addition to print- and web-ready files, you’ll get editable, live files for all final deliverables.

What rights will I receive? What rights does Knockout! retain?

All of this will be detailed in the contract—and this FAQ should not be considered a legal agreement—but in short, you’ll be assigned all copyrights to the final deliverables while Knockout! retains copyright to the in-progress, preliminary and working files. We also reserve attribution rights to display our work in portfolios and galleries.

What other benefits are there of booking a Branding Package?

At the completion of your branding project, clients receive a 10% discount on their first year’s Retainer Package. (You can tell this is a contrived question, placed here only because we couldn’t figure out where else to put this info. No one would actually ask this.)

When is payment due?

Your first month is due 10 business days (2 weeks) in advance of the project start date. This grants you access to our Branding Workbook and allows us to set up for your project. Billing periods begin on either the 1st or the 15th of the month. Payment for the month is due in full at the start of each billing period, and work cannot begin until invoices are paid in full. Proof of payment, such as a screenshot of an ACH transfer confirmation, is acceptable for us to begin work, but an invoice will only be marked paid on the date payment is actually received. This means that proof of payment does not exempt you from late fees.

Can I pay for multiple months in advance?

Are you kidding me? Yes!

I think I’m going to be a bit late on my monthly payment. How will this affect my timeline?

Payment for the month is due in full at the start of each billing period, and work cannot begin until invoices are paid in full. Each week into a billing period that an invoice is late, that week’s average weekly hours are forfeited. For example, the Middleweight Branding Package offers 12 hours per month; this averages out to 3 hours of work per week. If an invoice is one week late, 3 hours are now forfeit, possibly delaying completion and requiring a timeline extension. If an invoice is 3 or more weeks late, the month is considered forfeit; the overdue balance and the next month’s invoice are due in full before work may resume.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you have completed your initial minimum commitment, and do not wish to continue with additional months, please let us know in writing with 10 business days’ advance notice. This should be fairly easy, as you’ll be receiving weekly updates on hours used and progress toward completion; just reply to one of those emails to give us a heads up! It’s been a pleasure working with you! If you are unable to provide 10 business days’ written notice, 50% of the next month’s balance is due as an early cancellation fee.

If you need to cancel before your project starts, and no invoices have yet come up due (in other words, if it’s earlier than 2 weeks before your project start date), you may cancel in writing at any time. If your project starts in 2 weeks or fewer, it may be canceled for a 50% refund on already paid balances. If the first invoice is overdue, 50% of the unpaid balance is due as an early cancellation fee.

If you need to cancel within your initial minimum commitment, there is a fee equal to 1 month’s invoice at the most recent agreed-upon-in-writing package tier.

Retainer Packages

What if I don’t have enough work to send you to use up my allotted monthly hours? Do my hours roll over?

Hours do not roll over, and any unused hours are forfeit. This is a bummer, so to prevent this, we’ll make sure to come up with a back-burner list of projects to work on when there are no other active, pressing needs. This is like your design wish-list: stuff you’ve always wanted to get done but never dedicated active effort towards. That way we’re always making the most of the time you’ve bought.

What if I need more hours that I’m allotted for the month?

If you exceed your allotted hours for the month, the extra hours will be charged at the maximum hourly rate detailed at the top of your contract. We’ll give you a heads up and seek your written approval if a project is looking like it’s going to exceed your allotment.

How does priority scheduling work?

Priority scheduling means that if you have a big deadline that you need us to meet, and you have enough remaining hours in your monthly plan, we’ll push aside all our other clients’ work to meet that deadline. It means your work takes priority over Knockout!’s other clients, so it’s REALLY just like having an in-house team.

Can I call you on a Saturday for rush work?

No, sorry. We’re in the office Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. Every other second is spent at the dog park.

Do you work on holidays?

Also no. And sometimes the studio closes for breaks, because we’re all human and we need vacations. If that’s the case, it will be very clearly communicated to you in advance, and either arrangements will be made (work will be referred to one of Knockout!’s trusted design partners) or you’ll only be charged a prorated rate for the month.

What files will I receive?

On-retainer clients receive print- or web-ready files. Editable live files are not included as a part of this package.

What if I need live (editable) files?

Those can be purchased at a rate of $30 per hour taken to complete the project. If you predict you'll need editable files for just about everything, then we can simplify and build the fee into your retainer package.

Will you come to my strategy meeting/work in-house/be my son’s date for this wedding?

Yes/yes/no, respectively. Exclusive to Knockout!’s on-retainer clients, you may request a designer’s in-person presence up to a maximum of one day (6 hours) per workweek. This does, of course, require planning in advance, and is subject to our availability. Get in touch by email and we’ll work something out.

When is payment due?

Your first month is due 10 business days (2 weeks) in advance of the project start date. This allows us to set up for your project: creating your client portal, retrieving existing design files from you, etc.

I think I’m going to be a bit late on my monthly payment. How will this affect my available hours?

Payment for the month is due in full at the start of each billing period, and work cannot begin until invoices are paid in full. Each week into a billing period that an invoice is late, that week’s average weekly hours are forfeited. For example, the Middleweight Retainer Package offers 12 hours per month; this averages out to 3 hours of work per week. If an invoice is one week late, 3 hours are now forfeit. Everything Else

I have a one-off project. Can I work with you?

Of course! Project-based quotes are available upon request. Just get in touch!

Do you offer Work For Hire?

In short, no. Such an arrangement applies in only a very narrow subset of circumstances, few of which Knockout! offers. Reach out for specific questions.

Do I have to sign a contract?

Yes. We are both protected by a contract, and we've ensured ours are very easy to e-sign. We make our own mothers sign them.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept check, ACH transfer, PayPal, Venmo, and Chase QuickPay. And sometimes beer.

Where are you? WHO are you? WHY are you?

We're a small, dog-inhabited 2-bed home studio in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn! We are a growing (all-women, whee!) team of designers and illustrators with backgrounds in the printing, beer, and restaurant industries. Knockout! was founded and is led by Molly Cichy, previously Brooklyn Brewery's first ever in-house designer. We've worked directly with and studied under Milton Glaser, Stephen Doyle, and other design legends, and we're excited about and confident in our designs. As for the why: it's cool as heck to call your own shots. Why not?
